The  Boogeyman’s is out to get us.

At Least, that’s what they thought in Oklahoma.

In this case, The Boogeyman  is known as Sharia Law.

Islamaphobia is beginning to run rampant in the United States and other areas of the world, stoked by the constant flame and fear-mongering of Conservative Media personalities like Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Pamela Geller, Geert Wilders,  and  Sean Hannity.

Never-mind that out of 194 countries recognized by The United States of America, only 9 use some form of Sharia Law to govern their nation…

  • Iran
  • Pakistan
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Nigeria
  • Sudan
  • Iraq (prior to 2003)
  • Egypt
  • Bahrain
  • Azerbaijan

Of the 9 countries using a Hybrid form of Sharia Law,  none use the entire codified law known as Sharia.  Most primarily Islamic countries find Sharia Law impractical or even outdated as a system of justice within their respective countries.  That is not to say that Sharia Law has no influence on laws within these nations.  In fact, most laws used in governing the earths nations can be found to have some basis is religious law or custom, whether it be Islam, Christianity, or Judaism.

So What is Sharia Law?

  • Sharia Law is described as “a religious code for living, in the same way that the Bible offers a moral system for Christians.”
  • Sharia Law cites “Haram”(forbidden)  offenses that carry punishments for those who commit them.
  • Offenses include pre-marital sex, adultry, alcohol intake, theft, robbery, etc.
  • Sharia Law has either been adopted or has influenced civil and criminal law in various countries.
  • Sharia Law is intended to be applied to only Muslims.

Islam is the second largest religion in the world after Christianity having an approximate 1.6 Billion adherents making up 23 % of the worlds population.  It is also the world’s fastest growing religion, expanding at at a rate of approximately 1.84% in comparison to Christianity’s growth rate of  1.38% annually.  What most people in the United States don’t know however , is that Islam is one of three “Abrahamic” faiths in the world, meaning that it’s very foundation extends back to Abraham, the father of monotheism or belief in one God.  The other two Abrahamic faiths being Judaism and Christianity. This is important to remember because it is this special relationship among these three world faiths that renders them inextricably intertwined with regards to their Holy Scriptures and Beliefs.  Their connection if further demonstrated by scriptures each faith considers sacred.

Judaism’s sacred scripture is The Torah.

Christianity’s sacred Scripture is The Holy Bible, which includes The Old and New Testaments.  The Torah makes up a portion of The Bible’s Old Testament.

Islam’s sacred scripture is The Holy Qu’ran which continually refers in it’s text to the earlier revelations from God, this being The Torah (Judaism and Christianity) and The Injeel (The Good News or The Gospel of Christ also known as The New Testament) used by both Christianity and to a lesser extent, Islam.  In Islam it is a required that Muslims believe in the earlier revelations of God, so in effect, Islam’s sacred text is not limited to the Holy Quran, but includes The Torah and The Gospel (New Testament) as well.

Sharia Law not only is influenced by Judaism and Christianity, but contains portions of the two religions law and scripture.  For example, The Ten Commandments are known to believers in Judaism, Christianity and Islam, but how many people in the United States know that The Ten Commandments are also part of Sharia Law?  It was ignorance or apathy of this simple fact, that led the citizens of Oklahoma to mistakenly outlaw The Ten Commandments, in a misguided effort to curtail Sharia Law.

In 2010, Oklahoma State Representative Rex Duncan, a Conservative Republican, in conjuction with Oklahoma State Representative Lewis Moore (R) and Oklahoma State Senator Anthony Sykes(R),  introduced legislation that would forbid State Courts in Oklahoma from considering International Law and Islamic Law (Sharia) in Court Decisions. This measure gained popularity throughout the state, in the wake of recent concerns regarding the expansion of the religion of Islam in the United States and abroad, culminating in it’s inclusion on the ballot in November’s election as State Question 755, as a legislatively-referred constitutional amendment.

The summary of the measure reads:

“A Joint Resolution direction the Secretary of State to refer to the people for their approval or rejection a proposed amendment to Section 1 of Article VII of the Constitution of the State of Oklahoma; creating the Save Our State Amendment; requiring the courts of this state to uphold and adhere to the law as provided in federal and state constitutions, established common law, laws, rules and regulations; prohibiting consideration of certain laws; providing ballot title; and directing filing.”

The actual ballot read:

“This measure amends the State Constitution. It changes a section that deals with the courts of this state. It would amend Article 7, Section 1. It makes courts rely on federal and state law when deciding cases. It forbids courts from considering or using international law. It forbids courts from considering or using Sharia Law.

International law is also known as the law of nations. It deals with the conduct of international organizations and independent nations, such as countries, states and tribes. It deals with their relationship with each other. It also deals with some of their relationships with persons.

The law of nations is formed by the general assent of civilized nations. Sources of international law also include international agreements, as well as treaties.

Sharia Law is Islamic law. It is based on two principal sources, the Koran and the teaching of Mohammed.

Shall the proposal be approved?

Against the proposal

No: __________”

A whopping 71% of Oklahomans voted “Yes” on this measure as opposed to 29% who voted “No” passing this amendment to the state’s constitution.  But in the states zeal to defend themselves against a “boogie-man”, the unwittingly suppressed a portion of Judaism and Christianity as well.

The Fallacy of Fear

The Fallacy of Fear

The Facts are, Muslims make up less that 3% of the United States population.  There is no Islamic community within this country, that utilizes Islamic Law or Sharia.  It is an unreasonable fear to think that any portion of the United States of America can come under Sharia Law.  The Demographics do not support this claim. and the overwhelming majority of American Muslims do not desire to be ruled under Sharia Law.  It is Fear and the people who use this emotion and our own innate ignorance, apathy or prejudice against us, that are the true enemies of freedom . It is only through knowledge, understanding, and compassion that we can ever hope to successfully defend Ourselves, Our Country, and Our Culture, from the peddlers of Hate.
