Fearing Indictment, Joe Paterno hires Criminal Defense Team

November 11, 2011

Former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno has hired prominent criminal defense attorney J. Sedwick Sollers to represent him in the child sex scandal that has rocked the university this week, according to an NBC News report.

Paterno’s son, Scott, has denied the report on Twitter, saying, “To be clear, no lawyer has been retained. Not sure where that report originated.”

Paterno was fired late last nightby the university’s Board of Trustees in the wake of charges against former Penn State assistant Jerry Sandusky.

Paterno has been cleared of any wrongdoing in the case, but has come under fire for not contacting authorities after former graduate assistant Mike McQueary reported witnessing Sandusky assault a young boy in the team’s locker room in 2002.

Paterno and university president Graham Spanier were both ousted by the Board of Trustees last night. Athletic director Tim Curley is on paid leave and vice president for business and finance Gary Schultz has resigned from his post. Curley and Schultz are both facing felony perjury charges.

According to the NBC report, Paterno is concerned both with an ongoing investigation by Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly, but also about the likelihood of civil lawsuits by Sandusky’s victims and their families
